Why More LA Clients Are Asking for Vegan and Clean Hair Products
When I first imagined opening a salon, I didn’t start with branding, pricing, or even services.
I started with a feeling.
I knew I wanted to create a space that felt different the moment you walked in — not just visually, but physically. Cleaner air. Lighter energy. A place where both clients and stylists could actually breathe easier.
That’s really where the idea of a clean air, vegan-forward salon began for me.
At The Ministry Salon that intention is still at the center of everything we do.
Because to me, beauty has to include wellbeing — not just results.
This Started With Stylist Health
One of the biggest reasons I chose to build a cleaner salon environment came from watching the industry over time.
After more than 20 years in the hair world, I’ve seen firsthand how demanding this profession can be on stylists — not just physically, but environmentally.
Stylists are exposed all day long to:
color chemicals
lighteners
fumes / smoke from heat styling
sprays / aerosols
repeated inhalation exposure over years of work
And over time, I started noticing a pattern that honestly became hard to ignore — unexplained allergies, sensitivities, and chronic health issues including cancer showing up in talented, hardworking professionals.
It made me step back and ask a simple question:
What would this industry look like if we prioritized the health of the people behind the chair as much as the results in the mirror?
That question became the foundation for The Ministry.
If we were going to do this, I wanted it to feel safer — for the stylists spending their entire careers in this environment every single day.
Why Vegan and Cruelty-Free Was Never Optional for Me
On a personal level, this wasn’t a trend-based decision.
I’ve been vegan for over a decade, and meat-free since 2001.
So when I was building The Ministry, it felt natural that the salon would reflect those values too.
That meant:
no animal testing
vegan product choices whenever possible
intentional ingredient selection
and working with brands that align with a more conscious approach to beauty
Because if we’re talking about beauty and care, it should extend beyond just humans in the chair.
It should reflect a wider sense of responsibility.
Clean Beauty Has Finally Become High Performance Beauty
When clean beauty first entered the industry, there was a real compromise.
Products were often labeled “clean” but didn’t always deliver the same:
richness in color
longevity
shine
or professional results
That was the tradeoff for a long time.
But that has completely changed.
In the last few years, clean beauty technology has exploded.
We now have professional-grade color systems and haircare products that are:
high-performing
modern in formulation
long-lasting
and designed to protect hair integrity while still delivering luxury results
At The Ministry, we’ve seen this shift firsthand with the brands we use behind the chair.
Clean is no longer the “alternative.”
It’s becoming the standard for a lot of our clients.
Why Los Angeles Clients Are Driving This Shift
If there’s one place where this movement makes sense, it’s Los Angeles.
LA clients are incredibly intentional about what they consume, so it’s not surprising that haircare is part of that conversation too.
But I think it goes deeper than just ingredient awareness.
A lot of our clients are also craving something else:
A sense of lightness in their beauty routines.
They don’t want harsh smells, heavy chemical environments, endocrine disrupters or experiences that feel overwhelming or draining.
They want salons that feel:
clean
calm
intentional
health-conscious
and aligned with the way they already live
In a city where wellness is a lifestyle, not a trend, clean beauty salons just make sense.
Why “Clean Air” Matters Just as Much as Clean Products
Something people don’t always think about is the environment inside the salon itself.
It’s not just what goes into products — it’s the air stylists and clients are breathing for hours at a time.
For me, creating a cleaner salon environment was about reducing unnecessary exposure wherever possible and making the space feel more comfortable overall.
It’s not about fear.
It’s about awareness.
And creating a space where people feel like they’re taking care of themselves while getting their hair done — not compromising their wellbeing in the process.
